Cecil County to Host

Bassmaster Fishing Tournament

Elkton, MD:  Cecil County Tourism, in partnership with the Town of North East, will host the St. Croix Bassmaster Northern Open fishing tournament from September 8th to 10th.  Competitors will fish Thursday the 8th and Friday the 9th, where the top ten from those days will take to the water again on Saturday 10th.  Spectators can watch boats launch at 6:30am at Anchor Marina in North East and view the weigh-ins at North East Community Park at 2:30pm each day.

The Bassmaster Northern Open will be the largest tournament in Cecil County since the Bassmaster Elite in 2015 and the Bassmaster Opens in 2009 and 2010.  “We are thrilled to be hosting the prestigious Bassmaster Northern Open tournament this year, which will provide a great opportunity for our citizens to enjoy this amazing sport”, noted County Executive Danielle Hornberger.  Mike Kline, the Mayor of North East, added “this tournament is another great chance for tourists and fisherman from around the world to visit and appreciate the natural beauty of our County. We are grateful for our partnership with Bassmaster and look forward to bringing in more events in the future.”

The 2022 Open series, which began in Florida last winter, took place in Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, and New York, and will wrap up the season with its final tournament in North East.  The tournament will bring over 200 boats and 400 anglers who will compete for prizes, cash pay-outs, and the chance for an invitation to the Bassmaster Classic Tournament and the 2023 Bassmaster Elite series.

Anglers commonly travel to tournament sites in advance to practice fishing and become familiar with the nuances of the fishery.  “We’re excited to have hundreds of anglers in our County on the days leading up to and during the fishing tournament” noted Sandy Turner, Cecil County Tourism Manager.  “They’ll be staying in our hotels and vacation houses, and dining in our restaurants, all of which generate economic impact for our local economy.”

Several fan favorites will participate in the tournament, including Mike Iaconelli, Cody Meyer, Bryan Schmitt, John Soukup, and more.
