 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
County Government Recognizes 2023 Cecil County Recycling Award Winners

Elkton, MD – County Executive Danielle Hornberger is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Cecil County Recycling Awards.

This is the 19th year that Cecil County Government has recognized municipalities, private firms, and other organizations for excellence in recycling and waste reduction.

Town & Country Mobile Home Parks has been selected as the “# 1 Residential Recycling Hauler” in Cecil County for 2023. This is the second year in a row that Town & Country has won this award. This award recognizes the private residential refuse hauler with the highest recycling rate, which is defined as the percentage of material that is recycled as opposed to being landfilled. Town & Country recycled over 78,000 pounds of material in 2023, equating to a 23% recycling rate.

Waste Management was named the “# 1 Large Commercial Recycling Hauler” in Cecil County for 2023, the 15th time they have received this award which recognizes the large private refuse hauler with the highest recycling rate for waste generated within Cecil County. Firms serving Cecil County businesses and institutions, and which haul more than 15,000 tons of trash and recyclables per year, are eligible for this award. For 2023, Waste Management recycled over 889,000 pounds of material, which equates to a 3% recycling rate.

Waste Connections was named the winner of the “# 1 Small Commercial Recycling Hauler” award for 2023.  This is the 10th year in a row that Waste Connections (previously known as Waste Master Solutions) has garnered this award. This category recognizes the small hauler having the highest recycling rate. Firms serving Cecil County businesses and institutions, and which haul less than 15,000 tons of trash and recyclables per year, are eligible for this award.  Waste Connections recycled over 1.1 million pounds of material in 2023, or 10% of the commercial waste it hauled.

Elkton Recyclers, Inc. was named the “# 1 Maryland Recycling Act Metal Recycler” in Cecil County for the 16th year in a row. This category recognizes the firm recycling the greatest quantity of white goods (refrigerators and other appliances) as defined by the Maryland Recycling Act. Elkton Recyclers recycled over 16.5 million pounds of white goods in 2023.

Elkton Recyclers, Inc. was also named the “# 1 Non-Maryland Recycling Act Metal Recycler” in Cecil County for 2023 in recognition of its recycling of over 9.9 million pounds of non-white goods scrap metal. This category recognizes the firm recycling the greatest quantity of miscellaneous scrap metals that are NOT covered by the Maryland Recycling Act, hence the name of the award. This is the 16th time that Elkton Recyclers has captured this award.

Lidl US Operations, LLC received the award for “# 1 Recycling Business in Cecil County” in 2023. This award goes to the Cecil County business (other than a metal recycler) that recycles the greatest quantity of materials. In 2023, Lidl recycled over 20 million pounds of material, including metal, plastics, cardboard, paper, fabric, wood, and other materials. This is the second year in a row that Lidl has received this award.

For the 14th year in a row, the Town of Chesapeake City earned the title of “# 1 Recycling Municipality in Cecil County” by recycling over 390,000 pounds of materials in 2023, which equates to a 52% recycling rate.

Riverwoods at North East was named the winner of the award for “# 1 Recycling Apartment Building or Condominium.” This is the third time that Riverwoods at North East has received this award. It recognizes the apartment building or condominium owner or manager falling under the State of Maryland’s “Apartment Building or Condominium Recycling Program” mandate and having the highest reported recycling rate in a given year. Riverwoods at North East recycled 17% of the waste generated by its residents in 2023.

The Maryland 5-Star at Fair Hill received a Recycling and Source Reduction Recognition Award for reducing the amount of landfilled waste generated at the 2023 event by utilizing the Cecil County Recycling Bin Loan Program, which provided recycling bins and bags to help promote recycling by attendees.

Recipients received their awards at a ceremony at the Cecil County Administration Building on August 26.

During the ceremony, Cecil County Director of Public Works Scott Flanigan recognized the award winners for their collective efforts. “Congratulations to all the winners, and an additional thanks to the County’s residents, municipalities, and businesses for their continued support of the County’s recycling program,” said Flanigan.

Recycling not only helps conserve natural resources, but also helps to conserve landfill space which, in turn, helps to keep the County’s disposal fees down.
