The County Commissioners awarded certificates to the 2007 Recycling Winners at their July 22nd meeting. In 2005, Cecil County's 17% recycling rate was the lowest in the State of Maryland. While official results are not available from the Maryland Department of the Environment, the county anticipates our recycling rate to be over 53% for calendar year 2007.

S&S Sanitation - #1 Residential Recycling and Refuse Hauler - S&S Sanitation achieved the highest percentage of material that is recycled, as opposed to being landfilled. The company initiated a residential curbside recycling program and recycled 5.18% of waste collected in 2007.
Tristate Waste Solutions - #1 Large Commercial Recycling Hauler - A company must haul more than 15,000 tons of waste per year to be eligible for this award. Tristate Waste Solutions achieved the highest recycling rate for waste generated within Cecil County with a total of 891,000 pounds of material, which equates to a 5.2% recycling rate.
Junkbeegone.com - #1 Small Commercial Recycling Hauler - A company must haul less than 15,000 tons of waste per year to be eligible for this award. Junkbeegone.com specialized in single stream recycling pickup for businesses. They achieved the highest recycling rate with a total of 292,000 pounds of material, which equates to 86% of the waste it hauled.
Nationwide Metal Recycling - #1 Maryland Recycling Act Metal Recycler - Nationwide was recognized for recycling the greatest quantity of white goods (refrigerators, and other appliances) as defined by the Maryland Recycling Act with over 2.6 million pounds of white goods and an additional 430,000 pounds of non-white goods scrap metal.
Elkton Recycling - #1 Non-Maryland Recycling Act Metal Recycler - Elkton Recycling was recognized for recycling the greatest quantity of miscellaneous scrap metals that are not covered by the Maryland Recycling Act with nearly 4.8 million pounds of non-white goods scrap metal. Also, they recycled over 296,000 pounds of white goods.
W.L. Gore and Associates - #1 Recycling Business in Cecil County - For the third year in a row, Gore has recycled the greatest quantity of materials with over 283,000 pounds, which included metal, plastics, cardboard, paper, fabric, wood and other materials.
Town of Charlestown - #1 Recycling Municipality in Cecil County - The Town of Charlestown achieved a 12% recycling rate.
Cecil County Public Schools and Allied Waste - Award of Appreciation - Allied Waste and the Cecil County Public Schools were recognized for their efforts to implement single stream recycling in the public school system. Allied Waste collected over 134 tons of material for recycling, which equates to 9% of the waste that was generated in the school system.
